Modern tools for intensification of the biogenic furanic platform

Host: Jaime A. S. Coelho

Nowadays biogenic furans are among the most explored sustainable sources of chemicals, e.g. for the manufacture of resins and biofuels. The two main pillars of this biorenewable platform are 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) derived from the hexoses fraction of the lignocellulosic biomass and furfural that arise from the processing of the pentoses fraction. Despite the similarity in their structure these pillars largely deviate in their chemical nature hence, the challenges arising during their processing differ. The talk is going to draw a roadmap of the research problems in this area and provide a summary of original research on the stabilization of HMF as well as advanced applications of HMF and furfural in the production of monomers, densely functionalized furans, and bioactive lactones.
